Nigerians Can Now Send Money Out Via Western Union.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in collaboration with Western Union Company and First Bank Plc, on Friday, launched out-bound remittance service to enable Nigerians to transfer money around the world.

At the ceremony in Abuja, CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said that the project was in line with the bank’s policy to transform payment landscape in Nigeria.

Emefiele said that the initiative was targeted at remittances by individuals to dependants, including children, leaving abroad and for other person-to-person needs.
He said that the system would also simplify money transfer process in Nigeria.

“Western Union Company is well known as international electronic payment transfer service provider with a wide range of products and global coverage.

“Since the commencement of the inward money transfer service in 1995, which was pioneered by this same company, the payment landscape in Nigeria has significantly transformed,’’ he said.

The CBN boss said that in-bound money transfer services had been in operation in Nigeria, and were dominated by Western Union, Royale Finance and Moneygram.

“Today, out-bound money services is being launched to provide an alternative channel of foreign exchange transfer to serve the needs of small foreign exchange end users .

“Simultaneously, it reduces the foreign exchange sourced from official foreign exchange window in Nigeria and to a large extent, helps to conserve our foreign exchange,’’ he said.

He explained that under the initiative, a prospective customer, who wished to use the service, would only pay Naira equivalent to the money transfer operators for the foreign currency that would be paid to the specified beneficiary abroad.
According to him, this will end the idea of going to the Bureau de Change or banks to buy foreign currency before transferring money abroad.

“If you have need to make payment to your children, brothers and sisters living abroad that need small financial support, all you need to do is to take your cash to any of the 5,000 Western Union outlets in Nigeria.

“We are working very hard to ensure that the number of outlets increases further from 5,000.

“We have also agreed with Western Union about the need for them to work with Bureau de Change (BDC) operators that are well structured,” he said.

Emefiele said that apex bank was also working hard to make the BDC business robust for operators in the sector.

He said that the out-bound transfer service would only be conducted by international monetary service operators, adding that banks and BDCs that met the new CBN requirements would serve as agents for money transfer service.

He stated that bank accounts were not required to transfer funds and that transactions point would be within the reach of customers.

“We will allow cash, but going forward, we will discuss with operators of mobile telephones so that those on the mobile payment platform can transfer money from their accounts via western union to anybody abroad.

“These are some of the efforts we are making because we are embracing cashless transactions,’’ he said. Emefiele, however, disclosed that CBN had put measures in place to check foreign currency being taken out of the country, saying that the step would help to manage the nation’s foreign reserve. He said that guidelines on the measure will soon be released.

He said that the apex bank had been working with relevant agencies to look at reasons for movement of cash out of the country. He urged stakeholders to use all the channels available to transfer money and avoid carrying of foreign currency out of the country.

Emefiele explained that CBN had increased the allowable limit for credit and debit cards from 40,000 dollars to 450,000 dollars per annum.

He assured that the CBN would continue to provide effective leadership in the payment system transformation in line with the aspirations of the Federal Government.

Eid-el-Fitri message to all Muslins from President Goodluck Jonathan.

Dear compatriots,

I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters on the auspicious occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Fitri celebrations .I congratulate all of our countrymen and women who have successfully undertaken the purifying Ramadan fast.
As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitri, it is my hope and prayer that Ramadan’s spiritual lessons and the Holy Prophet’s teachings of piety, love, justice, fairness, equity, peaceful co-existence with others, tolerance, honesty and dedication to duty will remain with us all for the benefit and greater glory of our dear nation .May the lessons and blessings of the Holy Month also permeate into us all, and positively influence our attitudes towards our fellow countrymen and women, irrespective of their religion or places of origin; and promote greater commitment to the peace, unity and stability of the nation.

Although the observance of the Holy Month was sadly tainted in parts of the country with the continuing atrocities of extremists and terrorists in our midst, I urge all patriotic Nigerians to remain strong and resolute in defence of freedom, unity, law and order, peace, security and progress of the nation.
I feel the pains and anguish of all our compatriots who have experienced the harrowing impact of terrorism unleashed on them by brainwashed and misguided agents of evil and disunity, but we must never throw up our hands in helplessness and despair as the terrorists and purveyors of anarchy want.
Going forward, let us all remain unwaveringly committed to showing solidarity with our Armed Forces and security agencies and giving them the full support they require to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion.
I assure all Nigerians, once again, that we are totally committed to winning that war, putting the scourge of terrorism and insecurity rapidly behind us and giving the fullest possible attention to the urgent task of improving the living conditions of our people in all parts of the country.

We cannot and will not be deterred from our goal of positively transforming our nation into a strong, united, progressive, stable, secure and prosperous nation in which all citizens will live in peace in spite of our immense diversities.
May Almighty Allah continue to bless our nation and all who have successfully undertaken this year’s Ramadan Fast.

I wish you all happy and peaceful Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.

Presidency Eventually Moves To Repair Apapa Road

The Federal Government has moved to repair the badly damaged Apapa road.

Professor Sylvester Monye, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Monitoring and Implementation, disclosed this at the end of a meeting with the maritime stakeholders in Lagos.

He said the President had grown disturbed over a multitude of phone calls he had received on the issue.

Monye said the situation got so bad that businesses, including port operations, were affected as man-power and revenue were being lost as a result of the traffic gridlock.

Monye also said a new call-up system for tankers and articulated vehicles will be re-introduced with a view to monitoring the movement of such vehicles into the Apapa area.

Besides the agreement by maritime stakeholders to move their vehicles out of Apapa, the government is also considering going into partnership with land owners within Ogun State to build truck parks.

It was further agreed that after all the vehicles would have been moved out of Apapa, the contractor will move to site and the road would be repaired within two weeks.

Monye reiterated that the road was not a park but was made for everybody to use.

He said: “The road is not their park. Federal Government would not provide truck park for them.

“Does anybody provide truck park for Ekene Dilichukwu and the Young Shall grow? Everybody provides their parks, so why are we being held to ransom?

“We want to cooperate with them by assisting them. It does not necessarily mean that it is the responsibility of the Federal Government. They are there to make money; they should take care of themselves.

“What we need to do is to get rid of the trucks to enable the contractor get to work.”

This would come as a huge relief to users of that road and workers at the Apapa seaport!

FIFA Lifts Ban On Nigeria

The current crisis after the world cup in Brazil that has rocked the Nigeria Football Federation since the Aminu Maigari-led board was sacked on July 6 is to be resolved today in line with FIFA's deadline for suspension lifting.

The development is as a result of the vacation of a suit in High Court Jos, which had earlier granted restraining order against Maigari's board thus preventing him and his board from administering Nigerian football.

FIFA demanded for the withdrawal of the case as well as the reinstatement of the Maigari-led board of the NFF as conditions before lifting the suspension placed on the country since last week.

Nigeria was lucky to have the world football governing body extend the deadline for compliance to today due to the judicial workers strike which prevented the court to sit on the earlier fixed July 15.

The Amos Adamu-led lobby team sent to FIFA by sports minister Dr. Tammy Danagogo to intimate FIFA on issues that necessitated Maigari's removal returned to the country yesterday and has submitted its report, which hasn't been made public.

The latest development has saved Nigeria bid to participate in the U-20 FIFA Women's World Cup, as well as the male African U-17 Championship qualifier this weekend.

Maigari and his board will resume their duties today and continue their normal functions until next month's elections when they could be sacked through the ballot, in line with FIFA's statuses.

FG Responds To FIFA Ban By Stopping N253 Million NFF Monthly Pay!

The crisis that is currently rocking the country’s football is far from being over, as the Federal Government has ordered for the closure of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), bank accounts. This latest development came few days after the Federal Government denied the football house their July, monthly allocation, which amounted to N253 million.($1,559,995.or £910,526)

However, the men in the Glass House had been asked to privately source for their mean of livelihood with their three bank accounts frozen.

An impeccable source close to the Glass House hinted that the Ministry of Sports acted to avoid further accusation of government interference in the administration of the round leather game in the country.

“There is a general saying which states that you put your money where your mouth is. So, it is believed that this is the simple thing that the government has done.

“FIFA has asked the Nigerian government to stay clear of football matters and that has to be done in all areas, which includes funding,” the source posited.

Last week, the World football governing body, FIFA, made good its threat to suspend Nigeria, accusing the government of interfering in football administration and had also called for the reinstatement of the sacked Alhaji Aminu Maigari-led NFF board or risk heavy sanctions.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Nigeria Football Federation assistant Director, Communication, Ademola Olajire on telephone were to no avail. The image maker also failed to reply the text message sent to him to confirm the state of the football house account.
